The Importance of Full Time Nursing Support in Assisted Living

By Brooke LaChance, DNP, APNP, Chief Medical Officer, Home Again Assisted Living

When families begin searching for an assisted living community, they often compare apartments, activities, dining options, and amenities. Those things certainly matter, but one of the most important questions isn’t always the first one people ask.

Who is overseeing my loved one’s health and care?

As a Nurse Practitioner, and after spending more than ten years caring for residents at Home Again, I’ve learned that exceptional assisted living is about much more than helping with daily tasks. It is about recognizing subtle changes, responding quickly, and working together as a team to help residents remain as healthy and independent as possible.

Many health concerns begin with small changes that are easy to overlook. A resident may seem more tired than usual, skip a meal, become slightly confused, or have a change in their balance. To many people those may seem like normal parts of aging. In reality, they can be early signs of an infection, dehydration, medication concerns, or another medical issue.

Recognizing those changes early can often prevent a much larger problem.

That is one of the greatest benefits of having experienced nursing leadership involved in a resident’s care. Our role is not simply to respond when someone becomes ill. Our goal is to identify concerns early, communicate with physicians and families, and make thoughtful adjustments that help residents stay healthy and avoid unnecessary hospitalizations whenever possible.

Nursing support also extends far beyond direct resident care.

Our caregivers spend more time with residents than anyone else, and they build wonderful relationships with them. They notice when something seems different. Nurses provide the clinical knowledge that helps determine what those changes may mean while offering guidance, education, and support to the caregiving team. Together, we create an environment where compassionate care and clinical expertise work hand in hand.

Every resident’s needs are different, and those needs naturally change over time.

Some residents require only a little assistance when they move in. Others may have more complex medical conditions that require closer monitoring. As those needs evolve, care plans should evolve as well. Ongoing nursing oversight helps ensure every resident continues to receive the right level of care while maintaining as much independence as possible.

One conversation I have with families happens over and over again. They tell me they worry about what happens after move in. They wonder who will notice if something changes or who will help coordinate care with physicians and specialists.

Those are important questions.

Families deserve the peace of mind that comes from knowing someone is paying close attention every day. Experienced nursing leadership provides that reassurance by overseeing medications, monitoring chronic health conditions, communicating with healthcare providers, and helping guide decisions as a resident’s needs change.

When you are visiting assisted living communities, I encourage you to ask about the nursing team. Ask how often residents are assessed. Ask who communicates with physicians. Ask how care plans are updated and how nurses work alongside caregivers.

The answers will tell you a great deal about the quality of care a community provides.

At Home Again, we believe exceptional care begins with exceptional people. Every one of our communities is supported by experienced nursing leadership working alongside compassionate caregivers who genuinely know the residents they serve.

After more than a decade with Home Again, I remain grateful for the relationships I have built with our residents and their families. It is a privilege to be part of their lives, and it is a responsibility our entire team takes seriously. Every decision we make is guided by one simple question.

What is in the best interest of the resident?

When that remains the focus, families can feel confident they have found a place where their loved one will receive thoughtful, personalized care from people who truly care.
